Expedition Overview

Trek to the Summit of Africa with Lion Track Safari

Mount Kilimanjaro is not just a mountain—it is a life-transforming journey through five distinct ecological climate zones, from lush tropical rainforests and heather moorlands to alpine deserts and glacial arctic summits at 5,895 meters (19,341 ft).

At Lion Track Safari, our Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru expeditions are meticulously engineered for maximum safety, comfort, and summit success. Led by licensed wilderness mountain guides with hundreds of successful summits, each trek features twice-daily medical checks, nutritious chef-prepared mountain meals, high-altitude four-season camping gear, and strict adherence to fair porter treatment standards (KPAP).

The 5 Climate Zones of Mount Kilimanjaro

Climbing Kilimanjaro is the ecological equivalent of walking from the Equator to the North Pole in just a few days.

Zone 1 800m – 1,800m
Cultivation Zone

Lush lower slopes farmed by the Chagga people with fertile volcanic soil, coffee plantations, banana groves, and mountain village streams.

Zone 2 1,800m – 2,800m
Montane Rainforest

Dense tropical forest with towering ancient trees, hanging mosses, Colobus monkeys, exotic birds, and regular misty mountain rains.

Zone 3 2,800m – 4,000m
Heath & Moorland

Vast open heather landscapes dotted with prehistoric Giant Groundsels (Senecios) and Lobelias. Dramatic cloud inversions and sweeping vistas.

Zone 4 4,000m – 5,000m
Alpine Desert

Barren, moon-like rocky terrain with intense solar radiation during the day and freezing sub-zero temperatures at night. Pure silence and high altitude atmosphere.

Zone 5 5,000m – 5,895m
Arctic Summit Zone

The summit crater containing remaining glaciers, scree, and Uhuru Peak. Half the atmospheric oxygen of sea level, deep frost, and magnificent golden African sunrises.

The Secret to Acclimatization: "Pole Pole" (Slowly, Slowly)

Altitude acclimatization cannot be rushed. Our routes use the proven "Climb High, Sleep Low" strategy (such as ascending to Lava Tower at 4,630m then descending to sleep at Barranco at 3,960m) which boosts red blood cell production and ensures your body adapts smoothly.
