Quick Packing Rules
- Max Weight: 15 kg (33 lbs) for internal bush flights
- Bag Style: Soft-sided duffel (No hard shells!)
- Best Colors: Khaki, Beige, Olive Green, Tan
- Colors to Avoid: Dark Blue & Black (Tsetse flies)
Packing for a Tanzania safari is an art of smart minimalism. Between morning game drives across dusty savanna plains, frosty sunrises on the Ngorongoro Crater rim, and luggage limits on bush flights, what you pack will directly influence your daily comfort.
As safari planners at Lion Track Safari Tanzania, the most common call we receive before arrival is: "Can I bring my normal wheeled roller bag?" The short answer is no if you have an internal bush flight booked to the Serengeti or Zanzibar.
Neutral earth-tone clothing keeps you cool, dust-resistant, and comfortable all day.
1. The 15kg Luggage Rule & Duffel Bags
If your itinerary includes a bush flight (e.g. from Seronera or Kogatende airstrips to Arusha or Zanzibar), local airlines like Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and Regional Air enforce a strict weight limit of 15 kg (33 lbs) in a soft duffel bag plus 5 kg hand luggage.
Rigid suitcases with internal metal frames or stiff plastic shells will not squeeze into the aircraft's small cargo pod and may have to be left behind at the airstrip at your expense.
2. Clothing: What to Wear and What to Avoid
Safari dress is casual, practical, and focused on layered comfort. Most safari lodges and luxury tented camps offer next-day laundry service for a small tip, meaning you only need 3 to 4 changes of clothing for a 7-day trip!
| Item | Recommended Quantity | Notes & Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| Convertible Safari Pants | 2 โ 3 Pairs | Zip-off legs convert pants to shorts as the afternoon warms up. |
| Long-Sleeve Safari Shirts | 3 Shirts | Lightweight UPF 50+ sun protection; protects against evening mosquitoes. |
| Fleece or Down Jacket | 1 Jacket | Essential for Ngorongoro rim and 6:00 AM open-roof game drives. |
| Wide-Brim Safari Hat | 1 Hat | With a chin strap so it doesn't fly off in breezy 4x4 vehicles! |
| Trail Shoes or Sturdy Sneakers | 1 Pair | Heavy hiking boots are unnecessary unless doing Kilimanjaro or walking safaris. |
3. Camera Gear & Photography Essentials
Wildlife in Tanzania can be right beside your vehicle or 100 meters away across an acacia glade. To bring home stunning photos:
- Telephoto Zoom Lens: A 100-400mm or 70-300mm lens is ideal for full-frame or crop-sensor DSLRs and mirrorless bodies.
- Bean Bag or Monopod: Tripods are too bulky inside a safari vehicle; our Land Cruisers have padded roof bars where bean bags rest easily for stability.
- Lens Cleaning Kit & Dust Covers: Fine volcanic dust in the Serengeti gets everywhere; bring a blower and microfiber cloths.
Open pop-up roof safari vehicle with charging ports for phone and camera batteries.
Robin's Insider Tip: Leave Plastic Bags at Home
Tanzania has a strict national ban on single-use plastic bags. Do not pack items in plastic Ziploc shopping bags; use washable cloth packing cubes or dry-bags instead to avoid fines at international arrival terminals.
